Pfeffernuesse cookies

I’m talking Christmas cookies today. Today I am going to eat a Pfeffernuesse (peffer -noose-a) cookie.
I got some Christmas cookies from a few of my senior friends. I am grateful, really I am. I love cookies. But, gee these are not Christmas cookies. What are they thinking? I got sugar cookies, honey cookies, date cookies, peanut butter-chocolate somethings, some sprinkled with red and green thingys. You know, I really like these Germans here and their traditions, I like the food -knoephla soup, chicken & dumplings, but, they don’t have Christmas cookies.
Now the Norwegians they have Christmas cookies. They have krumkaka, sundbakkles, fudiman, rosettes wow! Now those are what I call Christmas cookies! I have wonderful memories of a beautiful glass plate filled with Christmas cookies with colorful pink & green & white divinity and nutty fudge stuffed here and there. It seemed no matter how many you ate the plate still looked full -the magic of Christmas I suspect.
Now the only try these Germans seem to make at having a Christmas cookie is these Pfeffernuesse cookies. They are sorta small, you can see the cookie part is sorta brown, so that’s different. They are not a sugar cookie. They are in a bit of a ball sorta pushed down and they resemble a snow ball. They are covered with powdered sugar so they are sure to be sweet. Well here goes –let me pause for the big taste. Hang on I will be right back

Ok Ok I took a bite. It was rather chewy the inside is not so sweet but I really like the powdered sugar on the outside. It has some funny flavor inside -maybe licorice? I’m not sure, but I think I could like these. They are different, & pretty -maybe I could say these are German Christmas cookies? Yeah, I take back all that mumbling I wrote about Germans not have a Christmas cookie. In my eyes they now have a Christmas cookie, and along with Curty’s (grandma Esther’s) carmels I bet they would make a fine plate for passing around. Merry Christmas everyone and I hope you have or will make wonderful Christmas memories this year!

I AGREE!!!! Kristy makes the krumkaka and we destroy them in minutes. When I take them to school they are cleaned out before I can get to second floor. I don't like the pffeff....thing. I do like the powdered sugar cookie with nuts in it but not the one with the funny taste. I love Christmas cookies and I have the belly to prove it.
