My Crush, Ross Riley
Ross Riley was a college student home for the summer. He was working for Bud, my step-dad (who owned a car dealership). Ross was the dentist’s son, a tall handsome dark curly haired fellow with really hairy arms. I’m going to tell you he was also very smart, quite brilliant in fact. I know those college classes must have been helping him a ton. I was about 8 or 10 years old and having my first “crush”. To tell you how nice he was to me, he offered his lap as a pillow when I showed signs of getting sleepy during that long two hour trip to Minot. We were going to Minot to either pick up or drop off a car. Somewhere as we were approaching Minot, I woke up. Ross’ brilliance shown threw when he told me about the special cows on the hills around Minot. They were special “hillside” cows. The black ones with two legs longer on one side than on the other. They were black -I could see AND they were standing quite level -I could also see. Yup Ross was just the smartest guy ever. I would never have noticed just how special those cows were. Therefore, I am telling you today that my first crush was tall, dark, handsome (hairy) and brilliant. I still love him. –I don’t think I’ve seen him since. But, I am sure I will someday. And I’ll remind him of the education he gave me while I was a passenger with him those many years ago.
